| Answer: |
For the most part, floaters are due to normal changes within the vitreous - the "jelly" that fills up most of the internal chamber of the eye. Some may be present from birth, but most develop over time due to the normal changes within the eye as we age.
In some cases, however, the appearance of a new floater could be the sign of something more serious such as a hemorrhage within the eye or an impending retinal detachment. Also, what we perceive as a floater might actually be a visual field deficit indicating neurological problem.
It is impossible to diagnose and give specific advice without a thorough eye examination, thus the appearance of any new floater(s) or other visual field change should be thoroughly assessed by an Eyecare Professional.
