| Question: |
Our son Josh will be starting his last year of high school and he has taken an interest in optometry. Where is there a good program for studies?
|
| Answer: |
There are two Optometry schools in Canada, however only the University of Waterloo takes English speaking applicants! All of the Optometrists in western Manitoba graduated from Waterloo so we think its the best!
Manitoba usually places 2 or 3 students in the program. Applicants need a very high average in a pre-optometry program (2 or 3 year science degree) at university. Usually all sciences are taken in high school to be ready for the rather arduous pre-optometry course load.
Brandon University has been the starting point for many local Optometrists, but any Canadian university can provide the appropriate pre-optometry courses. The list of prerequisites is available from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and does in fact change almost every year. Our office often hires students who are in the pre-optometry program and we sponsor scholarships at Brandon University for kids who qualify.
